What gas are you trying to protect yourself from? A general filter cartridge on a gas mask does not mean it has the proper absorbent. I would contact a safety supply outfit and tell them what specific gas you are trying to prevent inhilation of. There are specific filter masks for specific gases, like ammonia, SO2, etc. Getting the wrong filter is the same thing as not having a mask at all.
