My son came home the other day from school with a project tio do on the second world war and he said that one of the kids in his class had brought in a second world war gas mask and the teacher had told the class that noone was allowed to put it on as it was dangerous to do so, does anyone know why it would be dangerous?World War two gas masks?
First, real WWII gas mask filters contain asbestos, second they loose the function ( because too old ) can't breath firmly when u put on it, third they turns ( filters ) kind of virus - dust magnet. At the bottom line .. yeah, do not use antique gas masks with original cartridge, If u wanna use it nostalgic or safety reason please go and buy new filters for decent use.
p.s : unfortunately WWII gas mask useless against modern NBC threats
check this notice ( from a gas mask container ) Important note: It's important to be aware that old gas masks are dangerous to your health and may contain asbestos, chromium 5, mold, fungus and possibly residual agents left over from tests or training. These masks are of historical value only! Do not wear not even for Halloween. http://members.tripod.com/gelean/geln_mi鈥?/a>World War two gas masks?
The only reason I can think of would be the presence of mold in the mask. Gas wasn't used in WWII so I don't think the teacher could have been referring to any residual effects of toxic gases.
Maybe the teacher just over reacted.
If it was basic issue it just had a carbon filter and should be harmless. If it had been exposed to chemicals after 65 years in the air and handled it would be quite safe.
Gas was a ww1 weapon.
